New install hangs at "* Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation..."

It just won't get past this point.  It appears first in my GRUB.  My old Ubuntu boots and my God-awful Windows 7 boots fine, well, as fine as a Microsoft product CAN boot.

Is this with the 64-bit

Is this with the 64-bit installer or the standard DVD? Also, I'm assuming the liveDVD works since you've performed a full install...

Install hangs at Starting TiMidity++ etc.

Hi,

My install also hangs at the  "* Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation..." line.

Also, the install does not appear in Grub, but the previous ubuntu install text line is still appearing.

System: Intel quad core, 4GB ram, Nvidia 6200. Hard drives:

Drive 1 250GB has 2 partions with Win 7 on each

Drive 2 1TB Fat32 backup

Drive 3 160GB Dreajm Studio

What to do?

Same question

same question as above. Is this the regular or the 64-bit version of Dream Studio, and does the liveDVD work?

Since you both run Windows 7 in a dual boot configuration, I suspect there is an error with the grub installation. Try the suggestions here: http://ubuntuguide.net/how-to-restore-grub-2-after-reinstalling-windows-xpvistawin7

note that you can do all this with your Dream Studio install DVD, and that you should be following the directions for 9.04 and later.

Same problem here / 64-bit version

Hi there,

I am new here, but am intrigued by Dream Studio!

As a liver version (from a USB stick) everythings works & looks fine. But after full installation of the 64-bit version, the boot-process hangs at exactly the same spot as with the previous users that reported it here.

I work in a multi-OS environment but right now a fresh copy of Win7 (64-bit) was on the machine.

Grub works fine, I get to chose... Win7 boots fine. If I chose Dream Studio, booting of Dream Studio starts, but then it hangs, exactly as written above as well.

As for the machine, it is a Sony Vaio VGN-AR31S laptop.

The 64-bit version of Ubuntu installs greatly and runs w/o any problems (just as an added bit of info).

Well... maybe someone has an idea?

Thanks a lot in advance & have a great one.

follow-up on same problem...

Hello once again.

I have checked this once again using my other laptop. The one I use for daily work is a Dell Studio XPS 1340 with 4GB of Ram and a P7450 (Core2Duo @ 2x 2.13GHz)...

The same problem with the 64-bit install occures here as well: after installing, the boot-process hangs at the same item "Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation..."Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation".

I have tried the system "live" from the 64-bit DVD and it all works fine...

So now I am downloading the "regular" (?) 32-bit version, to see if there is a possible incompatibility...

I hope the 32-bit version will work, as I'd be delighted to have a working installation of Dream Studio...

As soon as I have any updates, I'll post once again. In the mean-time, if someone else has any ideas, any input would be highly appreciated.

THANK YOU & will be back soon.

32-bit DVD also hangs at the same spot!

Hello yet again.

Just a quick one, to let you know that I have tried it with the 32-bit DVD but the results are sadly the same.

Live system works off the DVD, install goes well, but uppon first boot, it hangs at the very same point (as mentioned above).

I guess I'll gibe up for now... will do some research & reading when I have some more time, but for the time being, I will revert back to my "regular" Ubuntu (11.04)... (and Win7 for some regular stuff).

If anyone has some ideas regarding this matter, any input would be highly appreciated.

All the best.

64-bit Install DVD broken

I was able to reproduce this and have found the cause: the 64-bit Installation DVD image is broken. I will upload a new image in a couple days, but if you're okay with using the command line a little, this issue is easy enough to solve (as long as you have internet access). Here are the steps:

1. When booting your computer, select the "Recovery Mode" option while booting, and when prompted, select "Netroot" from the list of options.

2. Issue the following command (without the quotes) when you're presented with a command prompt: "apt-get update && apt-get -y install linux-lowlatency linux-headers-lowlatency dreamstudio-headers && apt-get -y upgrade"

3. Reboot. You should see a newer kernel in your boot options, which should work.

I'll try and will let you know...

Hello there & thank you very much for your response! Indeed, I appreciate it a lot!

I am a bit busy due to my work, but I will try out the solution you mention as soon as possible.

As soon as I have tried it, I'll post the results.

Thank you very much yet again & all the best!

Not sure what the issue is here....

Unfortunately I'm not sure what the problem with the 32-bit version is, as I'm unable to reproduce this error with this version of Dream Studio.

Same issue here...

Hi. I have the exact same issue with my bootup which stops at Timidity alsa emulation. Started it in recovery mode but failed to fetch any updates.. Could not resolve ppa's.. Pity as it was the only distro that was easy to download and install that promises lowlatency and is set-up for a/v production.

No fix yet? Any suggestions? I guess I will stick to Ubuntu which works perfect on my machine - Quadcore, GT 8600. M-audio 1010lt.

Cheers

I can get past timidity at boot

Hi....I've just discovered DreamStudio and also ran into the "hang at timidity" error during boot.   I tried the above fix, but it didn't seem to work....again, boot hung at timidity.  On a whim, I used control-alt-F1 and got to the command line & used apt-get to install the correct X driver (for me it was nouveau that worked...I tried a true nviidia driver, but upon reboot, it didn't work....but the nouveau driver did allow me to boot into DreamStudio without a problem).....BUT, after installing and before rebooting, I created an xorg.conf file appropriate for my system.  I then rebooted, and everything is great....I can figure out the nvidia driviers later, but I'm in with no hangup during boot, and the boot is as is expected!  I hope this helps.  Jonny

32 bit - NVIDIA 9600gs

Hello! First off, thanks for your work on Dream Studio!

I have some observations regarding this boot hangup. I recently restored an old box that was lying around, and on my first install, the graphics card (NVIDIA 9600gs) was not in the computer, installation and boots from there on out worked absolutely perfectly, even when I placed the card back in and used it post-installation. I then wanted to get a second display hooked up, and it wasn't being recognized by the OS. I tried installing the NVIDIA driver (nvidia-current I think) and then on subsequent boots, got the timidity++ problem.

I'm not very skillful with linux at this point, I thought I broke something, so I reinstalled a couple times WITH the card in, as the live cd boots without issue. However, booting still hung up post-installation. About an hour ago, I took the graphics card out and used the integrated VGA out and it booted successfully. Upon login, Ubuntu was saying that a bunch of packages failed to install, and recommended a partial upgrade. This did not happen with the first successful install.

I'm not presently at the box, but I can provide more details later. I'd like to get this set up stably with two displays. Thanks

Same problem with 32bit -

I had the same problem with the 32 bit install.  I have a Nvidia card. It happens if I select 'install 3rd party software' during the install.
I tried installing again leaving that check box unchecked. After the install I installed all updates first, rebooted, and then installed the 3rd party nvidia drivers. rebooted and everything is working fine .

same problem!

After using Dream Studio without any problems for like a year and I got yesterday stucked in this. I cant manage how to fix it, i have been already in many forums and searched a lot for solutions but nothing. I have several audio sesions waiting to be finnished so it feels quiet frustratiing not being able to even boot :/
I hope someone can give a hand on this!
                   tnx!

Possible fix

In the original post, the problem with the 64-bit install disc was a broken kernel. In case this is the problem with your installation, try this:

1. Start Dream Studio in recovery mode. If you don't notice a menu when you boot your computer, simply hit "esc" right when the computer starts and the screen is still solid purple.

2. Install a generic kernel. To do this, when you get to the command prompt in recovery mode, issue the command "apt-get install linux-generic linux-headers-generic"

3. Reboot the computer by issuing the command "reboot now"

4. Pick the generic kernel from the boot menu when you restart

If this doesn't work, or even if it does, post a note here so we can either keep troubleshooting or let others know that this works. Note that when you're running a generic kernel, you won't get latency as low as with the stock lowlatency kernel, but we can get that up and running once we've figured out exactly what the issue is.

Hi Dan, I made a fresh new

Hi Dan, I made a fresh new install to 12.04..I was in a hurry for finnishing some audio sessions. So I'm not being able to test this possible solution ..Maybe it could help someone else who still deal with this issue. Bythe way..after I have installed my DS, it is asksing me to update around 300 packages..12.04 works really good so far so I' havent made any update cause I'm afraid this could install a lot of Ubuntu stuffs and mess Dream Studios configuration...should I do the full update?..some packages?..or just leave it so.
tnx for your answer and keep the good work!

Upgrade should work!

esoastudillot: The number of packages to upgrade is just a reflection of how much development goes on in Dream Studio. There are several repositories included in addition to the stock Ubuntu repos, which are always releasing updates. All the included repos are tested against Ubuntu 12.04, however, so there shouldn't be a problem upgrading. I just installed Dream Studio fresh on a new computer (literally yesterday), and all the upgrades went just fine. While it is possible for issues to arise with this many upgrades at once, it hasn't happened yet, and in the event that it does, the system will show you an error and abort the update before it does something wrong to your working system. This feature is specifically designed (by Ubuntu) to prevent the old "dependency hell" we used to get on Debian.
My apologies, however, for the issues you were having with 11.10. I must admit that I don't even have a working 11.10 install anymore, so I can't go too in depth fixing stuff like that. This is precisely the reason we've switched to a rolling release, though; 12.04 will be officially supported (with updates) until version 14.04 comes out.
