Open Source Artistic Works

Open Source Artistic Works

This project aims to make available the source files for artistic works, including graphic designs, audio recordings, and video projects.

Having source files available encourages not only the spread of artistic works themselves, but also the spread of the knowledge necessary to make such works.

To qualify as open source, an artistic work must satisfy these requirements:

1. The source files for the work must be freely available. In the case of a drawing created with GIMP, for instance, the .xcf file containing the separate layers of the drawing is the source file. In the case of an audio recording, the Ardour session or stem files would qualify as the source files (though the mixed down tracks are not source files).

2. The copyright holder of the aforementioned source files must explicitly license his files as open source (you can't release someone else's source files without permission).

The source files do not have to have been created with open source software. You can, for instance, share a ProTools session or a Photoshop file, though we certainly prefer you use open source tools to create your open source work.

Examples of content we'd like you to share with us:

Graphic Design:
GIMP files (.xcf)
Inkscape files (.svg)
Blender files
Adobe Photoshop files (.psd)
Adobe Illustrator files (.ai)
Photography:
raw files (.tiff, .cr2)

Because audio and video sessions typically contain many files, we prefer that you keep all files in a singe folder which is compressed before uploading. That is to say, we want archives of the sessions (.zip, .tar.gz, etc.)

Audio:
Ardour sessions
ProTools sessions
Fruity Loops sessions
Reason sessions
Logic sessions
OMF sessions
stem tracks

Video:
Cinelerra sessions
Blender sessions
FCP sessions
source clips (raw video files)
